All aboard!
Pichi Richi railway
Take a ride on a train. Everyone can enjoy this. You can take the Afghan Express - Port Augusta to Quorn return or single, every 1st and 3rd Sunday, April to October
Hiking for the fit and the not so fit.
Quorn has lots of interesting places to walk and you don't have to be super fit to tackle all of them. One local told me how they did Mt Brown with a pusher in tow. I wouldn't recommend it though.
Mt Brown National Park is at the end of Richman road less than 10 mins from Town. You can choose to walk around Mt Brown or even walk to Woolshed Flats, you will need to have someone pick you up from there if you don't want to walk back.
The rock wall falls at the entrance are beautiful and makes a good spot for a picnic. (see right )
If you are more adventurous then turn off the Richman valley road and walk up Devil's Peak. It is closed in summer though.
Warren George is a favourite with our family. We take all our visitors there. We have always seen Rock Wallabies and Kangaroos and of course the odd feral goat. There is a spring that has run constantly since we arrived in Nov. and you can find tadpoles and fresh water crustaceans here. Great walks and fantastic camp sites abound here. You don't need a 4wd to get in and you can even take your dog as long as it is on a leash.
Another great spot is Dutchman Stern which has home and hut for hire if you wish to stay overnight. The kids love to play in the shearing shed. The facilities are great. Water and toilets. Kangaroos are easily seen so too finches, Kookaburras etc. There are a few walks to do here for all different levels. You can access this place with normal cars.
Camping spots can be found at Warren George and in the hut at Dutchman Stern
Or the Pichi Richi Explorer - Quorn to Woolshed Flat (return). Departs at least every second and fourth Saturday at 10.30 am. 2 hour trip.
Go to www.prr.org.au for a more complete timetable.
Camel saffari anyone
I often see the camel truck pass by our house and wonder who is enjoying this passtime and where...?
This company can organize a treck to suit your needs. Short half hour or upto full day rides. There is even something for the romantic "Camel to Candlelight Dinner rides". You can find them at www.pichirichicameltours.com
Around Town.
There are plenty of things to do in Quorn too! Some interesting architecture can be seen in the town and there are some great galleries and craft shops to visit.
If you are into history and art then go to Railway Tc. Here you will find an old bank converted to a gallery. Lots of local history in diaries and photo albums can be found, plus some old wares and artworks. The owner is great to talk to and you could easily spend an hour there.
We have a fabulous artist who creates works of art in glass leadlight. This is Carina Turner You can buy prints of her work, leadlight creations or even commission your own work for a door panel or entrance window. I hear a rumour that she is going to be running a class sometime this year.
The park on Railway Tc has a playground, BBQ's and plenty of shade plus toilets and it is a good place to picnic. Or perhaps you could enjoy a nice cuppa in the Quandong cafe whilst you enjoy perusing the artwork that surrounds you.
Speaking of which the Trans pub has a great selection of paintings in the dining room which can be enjoyed whilst having dinner. Most of these are for sale too. P.S.I've got tabs on the chooks.
Get on your Bike!
Quorn is easy to navigate by bike and if you are holidaying with kids, biking around town can make site seeing much more fun. Stay on the roads though as we have some ripper prickles that can puncture tyres
The Quorn Area School also has a community bike track and play-ground which the kids can tackle and burn off some steam. You can also easily ride (on mountain bike) to Mount Brown but this could be a little far for the under 12's.
A lovely place to sit, have coffee, admire the art or the view of the main street at Quandong Cafe
Would you believe that it has snowed around Quorn? It was also heavy enough to stay around for a day or so and caused a little bit of flooding when it melted. It was on the Dutchman Stern and photo's of this rare event can be found in the Gallery on Railway Tc. Just across from the Playground and Tourist Information Board. There are some great pieces of art and some old diaries to read. So pop in and have a look.
Purchase a memory of your visit to the Flinders Ranges. Go and visit the Flinders Outback Colours Art Gallery while in Quorn. Here you will find many great Outback artists represented. click here to go to web page for this gallery
| Olive Grove - Farm stay |
Recently the Girl Guides stayed at Olive Grove so this gave me a good chance to see it up close. Olive Grove is an old cottage that has lots of character and all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.
There is a lovely open fire in the lounge room the kitchen is well equipped and there are two bedrooms which sleep up to 6 people (including cot)
But the best thing about Olive Grove is the scenery. It is situated at the base of Mount Brown National Park and yet only 10 minute drive from the Heart of Quorn. The road is gravel but you can take any car safely on this road.
You are surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna. Kangaroos come to visit and it is so peaceful. Fire wood is provided for the indoor fire and the outdoor camp fire.
I highly recommend this place for its setting and situation close to town. For more information goto: Here |
Take a look at Quorn with Outback Jack
Dutchman Stern Conservation Park has accomodation in the Shearers Quarters and old homestead. Tranquil, wonderful views and lots of wildlife. Contact Mount Remarkable National Parks to book your stay. There is also a Hikers Hut as part of the Hysen trail here. No need to book the hut, but you have to share with others. Combustion fire, electricity, running water and toilets. What more can you want?

Not far from Quorn is a town named Bruce situated on the Wilochera plains. There is not much there but what is there is historic and interesting. You can take this little detour when coming to Quorn via Wilmington. Gravel road but ok for all vehicles.
