Come and visit Powell Gardens during the Flinders Bush Festival
Now that the hot weather has passed, work has started again at Powell Gardens with 80 new plants planted out last week.
Brian Powell is most known for his work with quandongs, having spent 30 years playing around with them at his plantation at Endilloe, which he sold in 2003. After moving into town at the age of 77 he needed a new project, and founded the gardens in 2005. “The local council has been very supportive,” says Powell, letting him start planting on council land next to Pioneer Park. Powell Gardens was officially opened last May by the then Governor of SA Marjorie Jackson-Nelson, eighteen months after the first plants went in.
Now 82, Brian says his aim for the gardens is to have one of every species of plant that grows within a 20km radius of Quorn. And it has not been an easy task as many of the species are not available in nurseries, which means that his group has had to propagate them themselves. “Natives are notoriously hard to transplant,” says Powell, so the group has to collect seed or cuttings, as well as dig up the odd plant when they are in their dormant period.
