Dusty, Maria and hubby at Hotel Left behind or modern art? Once was but now is not Photographers paradise - Kingoonya

So many interesting places to visit are not on the highway, but this one used to be until they shifted it, the highway I mean. Kingoonya was once a thriving railway town on the line that links East to West and a place to rest on your journey North to 'The Alice'. Today trainspotters can still get to take some great pics of the Indian Pacific as it arcs it's way around the town but you will need to leave the bitumen to do so. In fact the way through Kingoonya takes you through some amazing countryside as you wend your way down through the beautiful Gawler Ranges.

On your way you can see rolling sand dunes red and white, lots of native wild life like Wombats, Kangaroos and Emus and a diverse range of flora such as the Quandong, desert raison, acacia bushes just to name a few.
You may also spot the odd camel too. Look out for the wombat holes that are often near the road and the occaisional ones that tunnel under the road. The Road crews try to mend the holes but those persistant wombats have been know to re-dig overnight, I should know as my hubby is one of the Road crew down that way!

The Hotel has had a varied history. Closed a few times and once left to decay, but now with new and inspired owners 'Frosty and Maria' along with their daughter Shilo it is being lovingly restored to a place of beauty and interest.

Maria showed me the 'before'  shots of the hotel and I have nothing but admiration at their dedication and determination to make something of this place. Which I think they have successfully done, but there are more plans on the drawining board yet!

The town has many photo opportunities with old buildings, relics and natural scenery. I was blessed with an outback sunrise of majestic beauty. For more pics HERE

Soon there will be an operating fuel pump and you can purchase fuel cards at the Hotel, along with drinks and food. So get off the beaten track and visit Kingoonya
