A Box of Matches.

Having to learn the hard way. Who here has ever had their Mum or Dad tell them not to do something and then they have gone and done it anyway? I remember doing this. Here is my story. (or you can use one of your own)

Aunty Sylvia was coming to South Australia and we had to meet her at the Airport. I was very excited! We lived in the country and a trip to the Airport was a big adventure to a girl who was only 5. The airport was exciting with so many things to see, especially the planes landing and taking off. I checked out everything, twice. But after a while even an airport can get - boring. Aunty Sylvia's plane was delayed, seems like fog in Tasmania had made the plane late. Two hours in an airport is a long time when you are five. Mum and Nanna were sick of walking around with me so I had to sit - still, next to them. That is when I saw Mum's bag on the ground next to my feet.

I wondered if Mum had any peppermints in there. So I started looking. Mmm just one but that was better than nothing. At the bottom of Mum's bag I saw a packet of matches. I had been told by Nanna and Mum never to play with matches because they can burn you and up until now I had obeyed. I would watch Nanna light the fire at night with them and then she would put them on the mantle piece and I never got them down. Nanna never seemed to have any trouble with them, she never seemed to burn herself. How hard could it be?

I looked up and Mum was busy watching the telly that showed the planes arrival times. Nanna was reading a magazine. Just one match, I'll only light one and then I will put them back. I took the match out of the box and slid it down the side. Yes it was easy that match lit in an instant, but in that instant my Mum decided to turn around and look at me. I tried to hide the burning match by putting my finger on it. OWWWW it did burn and the match stuck to my finger. Nanna took me to the toilets to put cold water on my finger. It hurt all afternoon. I did not light another match until I was 8 when it was my turn to light the candle for devtotion at Sunday School and I was still scared of them. How I wished in that instant that I did not decide to learn the hard way! Would it not be better to trust and obey my parents and God instead of getting into trouble.
